Toolbar active / inactive icon

Post by David »

It seems to me (and a few people I've recommend this plugin to) that the icons used to show if Adblock Plus is active / inactive are round the wrong way!

By having the red 'no entry' sign across the bug icon, it suggests that it is disabled. Similarly, having the bug without the red overlay suggests it is active.

No doubt it would cause initial confusion for existing users, but it would be more intuitive for new users if the display was changed.

Other extensions follow Adblock Plus's way of graying out the icon if disabled. Greasemonkey and QuickProxy do so.

Ummm ... Adblock Plus doesn't gray out when disabled - it just displays the bug icon ... and when *enabled* it has a 'stop' sign over the top, which suggests that it is *stopped*. That's the point.

bug = ads
bug visible = ads visbile (adblock plus inactive)
bug crossed by red sign = ads not visible (adblock plus active)

Simple. Everybody understands it.

This is a never ending discussion, because adblockplus extension enables/disables ads and can be enabled/disabled, so any icon meaning can be misunderstood. So everybody is right, and everybody is wrong, do not get angry both of you.

A piece of advice: try with Peng's implementation of Edfur's icons for Adblockplus, as described here. At least for me the meaning is clearer (and icons are prettier).

Removed personal attack post. Discussion is always good, personal attacks accomplish nothing and is wasted time and effort. Lets keep it on the subject and not on the person that is posting their opinions. Thanks.

@ IceDogg - perhaps consider what provoked the reaction and respond to that as well?

David, I didn't see it as bad as the one I removed. But having reread it and thought about it some more. I see how it was an attack as well. But please PM a mod or admin rather then firing back with an even worse attack in the future. I'm just trying to keep this respectable. Thanks

Sorry if you felt singled out.
