The adblock "block" - can I do these two things?

Post by LCaution »

Excuse me if the answer to this is buried somewhere in the doc.

There are two things I want to be able to do sometimes with the little "adblock" box that shows on the screen when it is blocking an ad.

1. I'd like to be able to click on that box to see just that ad. Why? Because sometimes AP gets it wrong and blocks something that isn't an ad. I don't want to disable the product or set up a filter until after I've checked to see if or if not an ad has been blocked.

2. I'd also like to be able to completely get rid of a specific AP "box". Why? It can screw up getting a clean screen capture.

Which box?!? Are you sure, that you use the Adblock Plus extension for Firefox and Mozilla?

yes - Adblock Plus

Yes. I removed Adblock a while back and subsituted Adblock Plus. I just checked my extension list and Adblock Plus is the only one listed.

When I have Adblock Plus (0.7.1.1) enabled, the word "Adblock" in a little oval appears wherever an ad is, supposedly, blocked. If I disable it, I can of course see if it was really blocking an ad or something else. But then I often forget to enable it when I leave the site - which is why I'd like to double-click or right-click or something just to see the particular image being blocked.

I'm using Firefox 1.5.0.4.

I found the following 3 entries in about.config:
adblock.fastcollapse
adblock.listsort
adblock.patterns

they are "user set". the first too are boolean (true). The third is a long string that starts "nieuws.nl/banner_image.......

You can reset these three, since they are only for Adblock. Adblock Plus uses "extension.adblockplus.*".

Which box do you mean? Can you make a screenshot? Or do you mean ObjectTabs:

Or do you mean the Icon:

Yes, it's that little box you have the red arrow pointing to

the one that has "Adblock" inside. Sometimes I'd like to get rid of it (as well as the ad it is "blocking" so I can get a clean screenshot. Other times, I want to "see" what it is blocking. Often there are multiple "adblocks" per page. Rather than disable Adblock Plus, reload the page and, possibly, get bombarded with ads, I'd like to be able to double-click on just one (or right-click with a menu option to disable just that particular block for just that moment).

Is there a way to do one or the other of these things.

p.s. thank you so much for your prompt responses.

In Adblock Preferences, turn off "Show tabs on Flash and Java"

For hiding these "Object Tabs" simply follow NJH's advice.

These tabs only show, that there is an object (flash, java, ...) and with this flag you can easily block these objects, if you want.
For more information you can take a look at: http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_basics#objects and http://adblockplus.org/en/faq_features#objecttabs .

thank you

That helps - but they are both "global" solutions. I was hoping there might be a "disable for just this one, just this once" option, too.

Maybe in an upcoming revision?

Thank you again.

The only thing you can try is that you whitelist the objects.

Example: You want to hide these tags in menus made out of flash items. Then you can perhaps use the filter "@@*menu*.swf|" or "@@*button*.swf|" (use both only without quotes!). The address of these objects must contain "menu" or "button", because only then these objects will be whitelisted and the tabs will be hidden.
