Which version Confused??
Which version Confused??
I went to http://www.pierceive.com/ and there are two different adblock pluses. I have 0.5.11.30 I also see there is 0.7.0.1. I can have both extensions named Adblock plus installed, but if I install just adblock, it updates adblock plus 0.5.11.30 to adblock (developement something). I am confused as to what is what. It seems like there are two extensions with the same name, maybe extensions are combining or something? Will there be updates to 0.5.11.30 or is 0.7.0.1 the update for 0.5.11.30? I am just confused and want to have the right one installed so I get the updates. Are AB+ 0.5... and AB+0.7... different or the same? My brain hurts. Thanks in advance for the reply.
It will take some reading, but . . .
The following should explain why there are two different releases. It's a bit of reading if you go through all the stuff, lol.
Unless I'm mistaken, the 0.5.11.3 version is simply Adblock, not Adblock Plus. The 0.7.0.1 is Adblock Plus. I went from the first to the second along with Adblock Filterset.G Updater 0.3.0.4 only a day or two ago. Now I'm having problems -- or at least I *think* I am -- and having read up on them hasn't helped. That's what I'm here for!
In any case, regarding why there are two, here's the short version:
http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/faq_project.html#adblock
Here's the history:
http://adblockplus.mozdev.org/history.html
and for whatever good it may do, here are the links to the actual add-ons if you don't already have them:
* 0.5.3.042 (version has already changed, lol)
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/10/
* 0.7.0.1
https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/1865/
If it doesn't appear there's a simple way to have the new version and updater working, I'll go back to the earlier one. It definitely worked and I never had problems with it.
Good luck.
Oh, there's also a forum for Filterset.G and the updater at:
http://forum.pierceive.com/index.php
I have not found a forum for Adblock 0.5x.

Oh, and . . .
As far as the Adblock vs. Adblock Plus goes I'm pretty much lost. I'd swear my earlier version was Adblock Plus but the add-ons page for it would indicate otherwise. I'd swear at one point I changed from Adblock to Adblock plus, but at this point. . . .

Edit: BTW, when you install Adblock, the reason it replaces Adblock Plus 0.5 is that they have the same internal ID. Because of that, Firefox believes them to be the same extension (which they are, really -- ABP 0.5 is just Adblock with some cool new features tacked on) and acts accordingly.
Re: It will take some reading, but . . .
@Tadiew: if you have found any problem you can ask for help or advice in this forum (but please use a different thread). But note that Adblock Filterset.G Updater works fine with all versions of Adblock and Adblock Plus, you should have a different kind of problem.
@snwbdr: to say it in a very short way, you can find:
Adblock (current version 0.5.3.42). The first Adblock.
Adblock Plus 0.5.11.3. Adblock development was stopped for a long time, so mcm modified some things and generated this version. It has the same ID than Adblock, so you cannot install them together, and it was developed only as a provisional patch. It uses the same source code than Adblock with some added features: whitelist, subscriptions and div blocking.
mcm has decided not to further develop this version, only security fixes or version bumps, but this version is not automatically updated to any other version.
Adblock Plus 0.7.1: mcm handed over ABP development to Wladimir Palant. This version includes currently subscriptions, whitelist and DIV blocking (but with different syntax) and other features.
Regarding compatibility among them:
* you only can have installed one of the versions at the same time
* filter rules for "normal" filters are similar in all versions
* Adblock G.Filterset Updater work with all versions (it was designed with this purpose)
* Filtersets subscriptions (without using a external extension) only work in Adblock Plus 0.5 and Adblock Plus 0.7
* DIV blocking only works with Adblock Plus 0.5 and 0.7, but the syntax rules are different so filters are not compatible (but they dont crash your browser or something like that, simply do not filter).
