abp isn't working automatically

Post by literaterose »

Okay, I installed adblockplus when I first started using Firefox a few months ago, and it was great from the start: no ads, faster page loads, exactly what I wanted, and it did it all automatically. I'm not much of a techie in some ways, so to be honest, the whole filters & rules thing in prefs is a bit mystifying, and there are no thorough explanations.

A couple of days ago, it just stopped working--just like that. Says it's enabled, but doesn't block a single ad on any page. I tried uninstalling & reinstalling--twice--and everything else I could think of, but it seems my only option is to block each and every ad on each and every page by hand in the prefs--assuming I could even figure out how for most of them. What's up? Did the extension just stop being automatic? Is there any way to get back what I had & loved? If I have to work that hard to make this work, then it's not really worth it to me, but I'd miss it...

Any help would be appreciated.

oh--for info purposes: I'm on an iBook G3 with OS X 10.3.9, Firefox v. 2.0.0.1

Open the preferences window of your Adblock Plus and check the filter subscriptions you have.

and that's what I just don't understand. What are "filter subscriptions" and where would I find them? When I open the prefs window, I don't see anything that says that. Here's what I see:
---------------------------------------------------
(Along the top): Filter Rule/ Enabled/ Hits

Add filter...
Exception Rules
@@|http://www.mozilla.org/
Advertisement Filters
*/adbanner/*
*/advertisements/*
http://*.adserver.example.com/* http://ad.doubleclick.net/adi/N1942.yah ... 2084464290?

http://us.ard.yahoo.com/SIG=12h0jqont/M ... eardiploma
http://us.i1.yimg.com/us.yimg.com/i/us/ ... hd_l_1.gif
----------------------------------------------------

That is *exactly* what I see: nothing more, nothing less. (Well, except the design elements: dividers, arrows, etc., which I can't replicate w/copy & paste.) That's what's there as of a fresh installation, with me doing no new settings, tweaking, etc.

I don't know, from your reply what I'm supposed to look for, or what to do if/when I find it. Please remember: I'm an end user, not a programmer or the kind of person who plays with code or other internal workings of a program. I assume a "preferences" box is going to be straightforward, with settings that I can understand and adjust as needed. I don't understand this, and more importantly.... why do I have to do this now, when I didn't have to for months after the original install? Did Adblock change, and this is the result of an autoupdate?

I'd love actual help with this...or I guess it's back to ad-loaded pages until I find another app that works...

In the same window at the top should be menus that say

Filters|options|help

Under Filters second option under add filter... is add filter subscription... That is where the subscriptions are located. After clicking on that a new window should open and you use the drop down arrow to select a subscription. Or you can visit the subscriptions list. Click on which ever sub you want and it should auto install.

All this assumes you are using the latest ABP.

Edit: PS my favorite one is Rick's Easylist Click that for auto install.

yes! IceDogg, thank you! That's exactly the kind of simple instruction I needed--it's done, and now it's all working perfectly!

Believe it or not, I used to be a tech writer (back in the bad old days of printed manuals) and it was all about explaining how-to for the folks who have no tech background at all. On some things, I'm great, but in situations like this, I just need a knowledgeable person who can be clear without being condescending: you succeed admirably. Kudos!

Thanks, I'm glad I could help.

We (ones that are familiar with ABP) sometimes forget that others might need more of a step by step explanation. I'm guilty myself sometimes.

PS I looked in the FAQ's and I didn't see a walk through for this either. Maybe it should be added? A simple how to add a subscription or something similar? Fact I didn't see much about subscriptions in the FAQ at all. I don't think that's been updated much since the added feature of being able to subscribe to filtersets. Just a thought.

ABP isn't blocking ads automatically as expected, which affects the browsing experience. Users are noticing that some intrusive ads still slip through despite the extension being active. This issue is particularly disruptive on mywheelspoint.com where ad interference is more noticeable.
