Feature suggestion: Block the ad that's hanging

Post by Jay Levitt »

I've got a pretty high threshold for what's "annoying" on the web, and a decent connection, so I don't have any subscriptions on ABP. I generally only block the sites that are slowing me down.

I don't know if Firefox has this type of introspection, but is there a way for ABP to see what threads are still waiting for responses, and list their targets in the context menu? That's all I really end up doing manually.

while i see your point, if this was to be implented it has to have some sort of limits which would be hard to determine...

if no limits, adblock would block all images on adfree websites that are purely slow (not cause of your connection but couse of the sites server)

so adblock would need to check if that slow link has a certain string in its name...and there comes the hard part...what strings?

they cant just hardcode the best filter since they update all the time and also who are to determine which subscription would be used? and also wouldnt it just be better to just use the subscription normally in the first place then? :P

its a good ide tho... now if only internet should be simple...

Oh, I wasn't thinking of any sort of automatic blocking.

More like:

Ho hum, here I am, waiting for this web site to finish. OK, time's up, I'm going to the ABP menu. And now there's a new section, listing all threads that are still (at that moment) waiting:

- Filter *.zedo.com
- Filter *.casalemedia.com
- Filter *.myslowsite.com

And, obviously, I'd have to be smart enough to use the first two and not the last one.

It's just automating what I'm doing now, which is:

Ho hum, here I am... OK, time's up. Look down at the bottom of the screen. "Waiting for c2.casalemedia.com". Go to the ABP menu, click, search for casalemedia, double-click on it, edit the rule to become a starname. Repeat until nothing's slow (since you can usually see only one "Waiting for..." at once).

Actually, if you ask me, I think you don't have to do it manually that many times... :?

I personally don't think it is a reliable technique to block ads, however my experience does incline towards heavily strained instable inefficient servers with insufficient bandwidth.

I would probably be possible to measure how long everything takes to load and then pick out the parts that stick out - give the user a list of filter suggestions: "here are the things that make your browsing miserable."
