New Icons/Buttons

Post by ArielL »

Hi. Adblock Plus is an excellent add-on, but the icons seem just a little out of place, meaning they look a little distracting (red stop sign with ABP), don't have the common, glassy look, don't dim with mouse-over, and no shadow. I'd like to contribute to Adblock by making new, nice buttons for it. How can I help and do this (who do I contact, and what would be the preferred type of graphics)?

I was thinking, maybe, something like this for the main button:

Or perhaps something like this:

Or maybe another design altogether.

Let me know.
Thanks!

I like...

the only problem I see is that the size for the small icons is not correct - it should be 16x16 px

Yeah? Cool. Well, I can make the different sizes and the dim on mouse-over/click versions after the programmers agree on a design.

Individuals not liking the Adblock Plus icon has been discussed over and over again on the forum. The icon was changed based upon consensus, if you don't like the current one you can change it quite easily for your own installation by using the Stylish extension or your own userChrome.css rules.

This is what I pulled from a Stylish script I used before the new icon was added to ABP to replace the original "bug" icon:

Code: Select all

#abp-status image {
list-style-image: url("data:image/png;base64,... }
Add your own image code.

Maybe it's about time that Adblock Plus's button at least fit in with the others, meaning shadow, a bit of a glassy look, and perhaps even a dim on click and mouse-over.

No offense, I'm sure you put some work into this, but for me I like the stop sign icon better. I didn't like the roach one we had for a while, but I did like has already been mentioned, I used a stylish style to fix it to my taste. If I didn't like the stop sign I would just simply do that again.

I like the glossy part of your icon, but I don't like the colors and the design itself seems very plain. Just letters mostly. This is not meant to put down your work, I'm only trying to give my honest feed back. Frankly I can't do any graphics work like that at all. So, yours is off the chart better then I could do. And yes I have tried before. Anyone that says some artistic skill isn't needed, is mistaken.

And I think it would take a lot for Wladimir to want to change the icon now. I could be wrong. But he's already been down this road before, so I highly doubt he will again, without a lot of thought behind it.

I find the buttons to be very nice BUT there are some serious logo problems. This is "Adblock Plus" not "Adblock". The accepted initials for Adblock Plus are "ABP" not "AD".

I already use this on the EasyList homepage as there is no real 'logo', per say (if anyone cares):

I have grown very accustomed to ... and actually like the 'stop sign'.

Well, if anyone wants to make a new button (and it doesn't have to be of this type of design), you can ask me (scrattyphotography.wordpress.com). Might I suggest remaking the current button to be the same, except with a glassy look and shadow? (And would it be possible to implement a dim with mouse-over and click?)
P.S. I am aware that Adblock Plus is written ABP for the button, but I had the idea that this was not necessary, and that in fact AD would be more descriptive.

Personally, I'm a fan of the retro, Zockman images:

Oh, and I finally got around to an update on the original AdBlock homepage, and Install page.
